Problem Overview
School leadership wanted to provide instructional support to teachers in the Career & Technical Education department to address the lack of knowledge and skill in building curriculum and lesson planning.
Solution Process
I developed a 6-day interactive, workshop-style course offered once every 6-weeks designed to incorporate interactive and partnered activities throughout each session. Participants learned how to start with the end in mind to decide on the major units, then break those units down into lessons, then activities, and assessments. They also learned a standard for file management so content could be easily found and understood by their teaching partners.
After introducing each task and type of document they were to work on, participants were given time with the teaching partner to develop the content and present for review by the instructor. Each session focused on a new aspect of curriculum building and lesson planning while adding new components.
This pilot program led to the same information being presented to the entire 65-person department and was implemented as the standard for the district CTE department on how curriculum would be built and stored. The slides for the full department training are shown below.
